A consulting engineering firm with eleven offices across the UK is looking to grow its presence in London just 18 months after moving into the capital.
Waldeck, which recently appointed Engineering Manager Dawid Powezka to head up its London operation, has moved from its office in The Barbican to larger premises in Shoreditch and is looking to take on another CAD technician and a design engineer.
This follows on from the recent expansion of the company’s Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Division in Sheffield which recently appointed two additional engineers in response to its rapidly increasing client base.
“The expansion of the London office comes on the back of several major contract wins,” explained Dawid. “These include a new rail operating centre (ROC) which is due to open in 2014 and two £18m student accommodation developments in Bath.”
“We’ve also been working on £10 million project to upgrade a church in Knightsbridge which has been converted into a house and has recently gone on the market for £50 million.”
Commenting on the firms recent recruitment drive Managing Director Fraser Mercer added: “Waldeck is continuing to enjoy a sustained period of growth despite the challenging economic conditions. Employing talented individuals like Dawid who have the skills and experience to see a project through from the feasibility stages to a successful conclusion is fundamental to our business.
“Since the business was founded over 17 years ago we’ve worked on some major projects across the UK and having a presence in the capital has enabled us to win more work in the south of the country.”
Dawid, 34, who now lives in London but is originally from Poland, graduated from Cracow University of Technology in Poland in 2005 and has since worked on some major national and international projects.
“I was involved in the design and detailing of the Central Park bridges in the Olympic Park which was a particularly challenging project as it involved very complex geometry,” explained Dawid.
“The bridge, which is made up of two permanent footbridges linked by a central blade-like walkway creating a Z shape that spans the River Lea, was constructed out of a steel space truss with an approximate span of 30 metres. At its shallowest point it is only 900mm deep and clad in mirror-finish stainless steel.”
Dawid was also involved in the construction of the Olympic Park Energy Centre which is one of the largest combined cooling, heating and power generating facilities built in the UK.
The project included the refurbishment of the existing historic Kings Yard industrial buildings which date back to Victorian times and which have been converted to partly house the centre’s utilities and office space.
As well as some notable UK developments Dawid has worked on the conceptual stages of £600m project in Qatar involving the excavation of 20 metres of rock.
Commenting on his new role Dawid said: “Waldeck works across all sectors which I really enjoy as the workload is varied and interesting. London is almost separate to the rest of the UK as the construction industry here is thriving and we’re winning new projects all the time which is why we’re looking to take on more staff.
“It’s great to be part of a growing team and the London office has really taken off. We pride ourselves on providing a quality job to the client and increasing numbers of architects are now recommending Waldeck to their clients.”
